The Burtonmore Herbarium
Classification of the non-spermatophytes to ordinal level
This page presents a view of the phylogenetic classification of the land plants to the ordinal level. It has been drawn from a number of different sources, some referenced, some not. It represents, in the end, my opinion of what is the best current phylogenetic interpretation.
Note that I have included extinct forms (indicated by the prefix †) whenever there is a good consensus as to their position
and also because the Burtonmore Herbarium possesses a few fossils in its collection.

The notation    indicates a link to the ordinal page listing of Burtonmore specimens.

Notes

α liverwort classification is based on the paper by B. Crandall-Sotler, et al., 2009
β bryophyte classification is, at this time, still in a state of maturation; the basal group phylogeny is based on the work of A.V. Troitsky, et al., 2007,
with the lower ranks filled in from the Bryology webpage of Bernard Goffinet; the detailed phylogeny of the Bryopsida is from Novikoff &
Barabasz-Krasny, 2015
γ phylogeny of the Polypodiophyta follows the PPG I classification presented by E. Schuettpelz, H. Schneider, et al., 2016
ε the charophytes are most probably a paraphyletic concept; some authors (e.g., Novikoff &Barabasz-Krasny, 2015) place the embryophytes as a sister‑group to the Charophyceae and Coleochaetophyceae
ζ unlike most, Novikoff &Barabasz-Krasny, 2015, place the Polysporangiophyta as a sister-group to the Bryomorpha, a group including the Marchantiophyta, Bryophyta, and Anthocerotophyta
